Combining offsite construction and cross-laminated timber with a collaborative digital approach
Crosfields Senior School, Reading
Using CLT and Glulam, the distinctive S-shaped building weaves around the existing site, forming an open courtyard. It provides nine classrooms, a staff area, library, wellbeing hub, as well as a double height, flexible performance space and café.

“This was a great case study in using standardised products and off-site manufacture to create an exciting and inspiring building. The relationship with the client, and the overall collaboration across the design and delivery team, were also clearly very positive in delivering an excellent outcome.” Judges at the British Construction Industry Awards 2022
The walkway around the feature atrium space was achieved by cantilevering composite CLT and glulam ‘Ribdecks’ from the surrounding CLT walls. This novel approach removed the need for steel trusses – creating a significantly more sustainable and elegant solution.
Engenuiti’s expertise and relationship with the timber contractor allowed for this complex solution to be realised. Particular challenges were developing connection details that met the fire requirements whilst also allowing for a relatively simple construction sequence.
Throughout the rest of the scheme Engenuiti worked closely with the Architect and M&E Engineer to optimise the structural design and allow for timber walls and beams to be exposed within classroom spaces.
