A modular timber prototype unlocking new possibilities for waterside living.
Float House, Rickmansworth, London
A spacious and accessible family home that rethinks traditional water-based living.
Architect: Tigg Coll
For: Private
Moored on the Grand Union Canal, Float House reimagines the conventional barge as a fully accessible family home. Set within a private mooring, where low bridges limit access and without a dry dock, the project demanded a lightweight, modular structure that could be assembled and maintained on the water.
The bespoke structural strategy combines an interlocking prefabricated steel hull, linked by a steel grillage, with an elegant timber superstructure. The timber structure minimises weight above the water, helping to maintain a low centre of gravity and bringing a warm, calm & natural feel to the space.
Built on the water, Engenuiti carefully developed the structural design, including connections, to facilitate construction in such unique and challenging circumstances. Float House demonstrates how innovative design, engineering and modern construction techniques can combine to create excellent and unique outcomes.
