Setting a precedent for low-carbon public design
Oxford North Cycle Pavilion
Geometry, structure and connections were developed in direct response to fabrication, enabling a level of precision and efficiency not achievable through traditional methods.
Architect: Fletcher Priest Architects

Earlier iterations of the scheme had cycle parking below the buildings. It was a conscious design decision to move the parking to outside to celebrate cycling in the context of encouraging active travel, which seemed a good thing to do. Jonathan Kendall, Fletcher Priest Architects
The Cycle Pavilion forms a key entrance to Oxford North, the city’s new global innovation district, providing covered cycle parking..
The pavilion’s distinctive radial structure takes its cue from the spokes of a bicycle wheel. A glulam frame and CLT deck work with the natural characteristics of timber to create an elegant, efficient structure, while significantly reducing embodied carbon. With very little operational energy required, the pavilion has been designed as a low-carbon piece of public infrastructure.
Engenuiti worked closely with Fletcher Priest Architects and timber specialist Xylotek from an early stage, developing the structure, geometry and connections together. Particular attention was given to the detailing of the exposed timber, with interfaces, connections and drainage carefully designed for long-term durability in an external environment.
The result shows how thoughtful engineering and close collaboration can make timber work beautifully, even where durability is one of the biggest challenges.
