Client:  Cargill Group

Architect:  WATG

The existing Cargill’s department store in Colombo, Sri Lanka, is a wonderful example of Victorian colonial architecture with a grand brick facade.  The building is located in the heart of the central business district and surrounded by other buildings of the same era.

The brief was to retain the existing façade and incorporate a minimum of two levels of basement for car parking and create a new 170 key five star hotel.

The demanding brief and tight urban context required significant investigation of the construction sequencing and how it would integrate with the structural design.
