Great article on the University of Kent Economics Building in Construction Enquirer online. We are really enjoying working with Willmott Dixon, Bond Bryan Architects and the design team on the project.
The new 3 storey Economics Building on the University of Kent campus has two distinct wings providing lecture theatres, classroom/teaching offices and shared teaching spaces for the students. The best structural solution for the building was a steel frame with cross-laminated timber floor slabs, as it primarily relies on columns as the vertical load bearing structure which gives greater future flexibility for the building's layout. The use of cross-laminated timber also contributed to the desire for the building to be highly sustainable and achieve BREEAM ‘Excellent’.
The project starts on-site this week.
