City Centre Leisure Centre design team announced
The team that will design Coventry's new £26.5 million city centre water park, swimming pool and leisure centre has been appointed by Coventry City Council.
Engenuiti has been commissioned as structural and civil engineers, working alongside architects Faulkner Browns and water park designers Water Technology Inc. to design the building which will house a water park with slides, a swimming pool, 100 – 120 station gym, exercise studios, squash courts, health suite, and spa.
Cllr Kevin Maton, Cabinet Member for Business, Enterprise and Employment said
“I’m really excited that we have been able to put together such a high profile design team with an international reputation. We were clear in the brief that we want a landmark building - appropriate for our city centre. We were equally tough in our expectations for inside – the water slides and features need to have the wow factor as we expect to draw people into the city centre from across the city and the wider region. These various specialists are leaders in this area and I am confident that they will design something that is as visually impressive on the outside as it is exciting and fun to use on the inside.
City centres are changing – they are no longer just about shopping. They are about spaces where people live, work and have fun. This new facility will be an important part of the new mix for our city centre as we strive to make Coventry a top ten city again.
We believe our proposal to provide a swimming pool and water park with spa facilities provides the best option for Coventry residents. Later this year we will be able to see the designs coming together and I hope at this point people will be inspired at the thought of having this fantastic facility in our city centre.”
The project team will work together with the client over the next year, with construction work set to start on site in 2017 and a planned opening date of summer 2019. It is estimated that 1.1 - 1.3 million people a year will visit the new water park and its associated facilities.
Nathan Wheatley, Director at Engenuiti said,
“We are delighted to be working on this exciting new water park and are looking forward to developing intelligent engineering proposals for the project on this fantastic site in Coventry.”
The other professional appointments that complete the design team are Appleyard and Trew (Project Management and Cost Consultancy) and Desco (Mechanical and Electrical services).
